Thermoforming is a manufacturing process in which a plastic sheet is heated to become flexible, then shaped or contoured using a mold, and trimmed to create the final part or product. Vacuum forming and pressure forming are two of the most popular types of thermoforming processes.
The main difference between vacuum forming and other thermoforming processes lies in the methods used to shape the parts and the number and type of molds used.

The vacuum forming process works step by step as follows:

1. A plastic sheet is placed in an open frame and clamped in place.
2. The plastic sheet is softened using a heat source until it reaches the appropriate forming temperature and becomes flexible.
3. The flexible plastic sheet is lowered onto a mold and drawn into place by a vacuum from the other side of the mold. Female (or concave) molds must have small holes drilled in the material so the vacuum can effectively pull the thermoplastic sheet into the proper shape.
4. Once the plastic is formed around/in the mold, it must be cooled. For larger items, fans and/or water mist are sometimes used to expedite this step in the production cycle.
5. After the plastic cools, it can be removed from the mold and released from the frame.
6. The finished part must be trimmed from the excess material, and the edges may need to be cut, sanded, or smoothed.

Vacuum forming is a relatively quick process, with the heating and vacuuming stages typically taking only a few minutes. However, depending on the size and complexity of the parts being produced, cooling, trimming, and mold creation can take significantly more time.

Different vacuum forming machines operate on the same principle but differ in the method based on their capacity.
There are various categories of vacuum forming machines:

1. DIY Machines

DIY machines are used for small-scale production. In this case, only a small number of heaters are used. As a result, they cannot be used in industrial production. DIY machines may use ceramic heaters, but they are not specialized enough to work with complex equipment and their response time is insufficient.

These devices have a simple design and are easy to operate, install, and maintain. Three different heating zones with different temperature settings are located in one workstation. A vacuum pump is situated at the base of the machine, and the heating box is covered with a lid.

Toys, masks, stationery, small tools, blister packs, and other items can be produced using DIY machines.

2. Desktop Machines

Acrylic products are formed using a desktop vacuum forming machine. There are several main series of these devices, each with different functions.

The vacuum forming machine uses the same operating system as other vacuum forming machines, and materials such as acrylic, ABS, PC, PS, PVC, PP, and others are suitable for use.

They are used in many industrial fields, as well as for various advertising displays and stage designs.

3. Single Heater Machine

The single heater machine can be used with multiple types of plastic sheets and optical materials.
The mechanical and electrical components of these machines are integrated and feature automated heating control, high frequency, and efficient temperature increase.

The ovens in these thermoforming machines have easy-to-install cabins for automated temperature controls and speed switches.

They can produce items such as thin-walled food containers, travel accessories, cosmetics, decorations, toys, and electrical goods.

4. Double Heater Machine

The double heater vacuum forming machine uses electro-mechanical integration. It is capable of performing all tasks such as forming, cooling, trimming, and finishing. It is fully automated with all digital power controls.

It is used on plastic sheets, including PS, HIPS, PVC, PET, and PP. It has an automated frame for proper sheet feeding.

Each of the heaters in this machine has a self-regulator that controls the heating temperatures of the sheet. Although the double heater machine is designed for negative molds, it can also produce concave or convex shapes as needed. With regulators for the amount of mist spray, the heated sheet is cooled according to the product requirements.
